Today, November 2nd, is Dia De Los Muertos, a very important Mexican tradition.
Summary of Dia de los Muertos
Day of the dead is a day when the dead are honored and remembered. It is not about being spooky, scary or sad. It is thought that the spirit of the dead is visiting their family. So we prepare an altar.
Preparing an Altar
First we use a tablecloth to prepare the table. The spirit may be dirty and need to clean up. So we will set out some soap, lotion, and a towel so they can clean up.
Then we will decorate with the four elements of the earth.
Wind (Paper Cut Out)…Bowl of water…Candles (fire)…Food (Crops and Earth)
We will also place crosses and flower and religious artifacts on the altar.
Next, we talk about our loved ones and place pictures or remembrances on the altar. And we pray and serve a plate of goodies for the deceased on the altar.
Celebrate today. Enjoy a meal with your deceased family members. (Pan de muerto and sugar skulls are a plus!) Listen to music and celebrate their life and what they meant to you.
