2011 Dia de los Muertos Mariachi Extravaganza

The Dia de los Muertos Mariachi Extravaganza celebration at Gregg-Clarke Park (next to the Kyle Pool) features fourteen musical and dance groups, including all Hays CISD Mariachi students.

Between the hours of 10am until 2pm, on November 5, 2011, the students enrolled in the Hays CISD Mariachi program, ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade, are performing Mariachi, a music that has been passed down for generations.

All six Hays CISD Mariachi groups are participating in the event

Lehman High School: Los Lobos
Lehman High School: Azul y Plata
Mariachi de Lehman High School
Chapa Middle School: Mariachi Juvenil de Armando Chapa
Simon Middle School Mariachi
Wallace Middle School: Mariachi del Campo

Hays CISD music students are performing Mariachi, a style of music originating in Mexico. Mariachi, features a combination of violin, trumpets, classical guitar, vihuela (a high-pitched, five-string guitar), a guitarrón (a large acoustic bass guitar)and powerful, moving vocals. Mariachi has been passed from generation to generation since the 18th century.

In addition, the Blanco Vista (Hays CISD) Dual Language Program teachers and students will conduct a parade though the park in traditional costumes and masks. It’s a very beautiful and touching performance for the whole family.

Several special guests will also perform. Special Guests include singer Celeste Curiel, Texas State University Mariachi, Texas State Salsa de Rio, Fuentes Elementary School Glee Club, San Marcos Mariachi Academy Mariachi Bondad, Ballet Folklorico de Central Cultura de San Marcos, and Elite Fitness performing a Zumba demonstration

This cultural and musical celebration featuring the young people of Kyle is produced by the Lehman High School Band Boosters.

The music is part of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) observance. Dia de los Muertos is a time to remembering deceased family members and a celebration of the love and respect we have for them. Celebrants build alters to the dead, and include favorite foods and beverages of the deceased, photos, and memorabilia.
Celebrated in Mexico, Latin America, and the United States, it is a day set aside to remember and pray for the deceased. In Mexico, the celebration takes place at the beginning of November, in conjunction with the All Saint’s Day (November 1) and All Soul’s Day (Nov 2).

There is also $5 BBQ Chicken plate sale benefitting the Mariachi program. Pre-sale tickets can be obtained from any Mariachi student.

There will be a chance to get some early Christmas shopping done at the vendor booths, plus a bounce house, games and crafts for the kids. There will be many other non-profit vendors also, including local PTA’s, and project graduation.

Gregg-Clarke Park is located at 1100 W Center ST, Kyle, Texas 78640.

Visiting Kyle for Tasty Food: Texas Pie Company

Yep, folks come out to Kyle for tasty food at the Texas Pie Company.

The Texas Pie Company offers homemade pies, casseroles and other baked goods. I suggest the Famous Pot Pie or the King Ranch Chicken. The Turkey and Swiss Sandwich if really good too. They even cater events serving 10 to 400 guests. Come out and eat and, if you’d like, shoot a video about it. Like this guy did.
